Clatsop County is located in the northwest corner of Oregon. The vast Columbia River, 4.5 miles wide near Astoria, separates Oregon from neighboring Washington State. The larger cities of our county are located along the banks of the Columbia River and along the Pacific Ocean. Those cities are: Astoria, Warrenton, Gearchart, Seaside, and Cannon Beach. Smaller communities are located inland. The Coast Range, at Clatsop County's back door, provides a dramatic backdrop for the area.
Astoria, at the mouth of this great river, was established in 1811 as a fur trading post, and is the oldest American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains, dating from the fur trading post set up by John Jacob Astor’s men in 1811, although John Jacob Astor himself never visited Astoria. A hundred years ago, Astoria was the second largest city in Oregon with a population of 8,975. The population now is just over 10,000.
Warrenton is filled with history and opportunity. You will find Fort Stevens State Park, the Lewis and Clark National Memorial and many families having spent generations in fishing, logging and farming. Combine that with larger shopping opportunities like Fred Meyer, Home Depot and Costco, you have a day of adventure ahead.
Gearhart is a quiet residential community sporting one of the oldest golf courses on the west coast, and miles of sandy beaches. You will find a variety of restaurants and shopping.
Seaside is a family-friendly community and is one of the earliest resort communities of Oregon. In addition to many boutique shops and family-owned restaurants, you will find the Seaside Factory Outlet Center and many familiar chain establishments.
Cannon Beach is a family-friendly resort town that supports the arts resplendent with galleries and local artists. You will find it a dog-friendly community with locally-owned restaurants and stores.
With its many natural features, the area is resplendent with recreational opportunities, including boating, fishing, hiking, swimming and beachcombing.
The principal industries of Clatsop County are tourism, fishing, lumber, and agriculture. The population of Clatsop County was estimated at 37, 243 in 2009, a 4.5% increase over the 2000 census.
