About the Area

The Port of Astoria serves all residents of Clatsop County. Clatsop County is located in the northwest corner of Oregon. The vast Columbia River, 4.5 miles wide near Astoria, separates Oregon from neighboring Washington State. The larger cities of our county are located along the banks of the Columbia River and along the Pacific Ocean. Those cities are: Astoria, Warrenton, Gearchart, Seaside, and Cannon Beach. Smaller communities are located inland.

Astoria, at the mouth of this great river, was established in 1811 as a fur trading post, and is the oldest American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains. Seaside, Gearhart and Cannon Beach are coastal communities. Warrenton has both river and ocean frontage. The Coast Range, at Clatsop County's back door, provides a dramatic backdrop for the area.

Warrenton is filled with history. You will find Fort Stevens State Park, the Lewis and Clark National Memorial and many families having spent generations in fishing, logging and farming.

Gearhart is a residential community sporting one of the oldest golf courses on the west coast, and miles of sandy beaches. You will find a variety of restaurants and shopping.

Seaside is a family-friendly community and is one of the earliest resort communities of Oregon. In addition to many boutique shops and family-owned restaurants, you will find the Seaside Factory Outlet Center and many familiar chain establishments.

Cannon Beach is a family-friendly resort town that supports the arts resplendent with galleries and local artists. You will find it a dog-friendly community with locally-owned restaurants and stores.

With its many natural features, the area is resplendent with recreational opportunities, including boating, fishing, hiking, swimming and beachcombing.

The principle industries of Clatsop County are fishing, lumber, and agriculture. The population of Clatsop County was 35,630 in 2000, a 6.99% increase over 1990.  High-speed Internet services and telecommunications route diversity were deployed in the county in 2003.
