About the Area

Clatsop County is located in the northwest corner of Oregon. The vast Columbia River, 4.5 miles wide near Astoria, separates Oregon from neighboring Washington State. Much of Clatsop County fronts the Pacific Ocean.
Astoria, at the mouth of this great river, was established in 1811 as a fur trading post, and is the oldest white settlement west of the Rocky Mountains. Seaside, Gearhart and Cannon Beach are coastal communities. Warrenton has both river and ocean frontage. The Coast Range, at Clatsop County's back door, provides a dramatic backdrop for the area.
With its many natural features, the area is resplendent with recreational opportunities, including boating, fishing, hiking, swimming and beachcombing.
The principle industries of Clatsop County are fishing, lumber, and agriculture. The population of Clatsop County was 35,630 in 2000, a 6.99% increase over 1990. High-speed Internet services and telecommunications route diversity were deployed in the county in 2003.
